October seems like such a time of transitions for our family – three years ago we made a big transition and moved to Rochester on October 8th. We like to do a lot of big things at once. Remember that time we had a baby, then moved to NY, and sold our first home mid-move while driving across the interstate to Albany? This move was a little less crazy, but had some unique features. Josh started fifth grade twice in two months, having started the year at our beloved OSL just for the month of September. We slept on air mattresses in the parsonage that first night, then the next morning I had a job interview at URMC Primary Care. I spent two weeks sleeping on the couch in our Albany living room, finishing out my job at AMC (sniffle), and then finally moved myself to Rochester permanently.

I’ll never forget how I felt as I drove away from Albany Med that last Friday. My little SUV was packed with the last few things from our home. Driving along the interstate, I pulled over and just sobbed for a minute. I was such a mixture of relieved and happy (to be on my way to my guys and our new church) and sad (to be leaving my friends and awesome job), what a mess! Our new church family was so loving and accommodating and wonderful, with many thoughtful things taken care of for us.
So here we are, three years later. Josh is in his last year of middle school, turning 13 in just a few days. Brian is approaching the end of his D.Min., and enjoying pastoring at Trinity. I’m still finding my way at URMC (it’s a way bigger organization than AMC), but I find my work fulfilling and love my coworkers.
We’ve learned how to pronounce Chili (it’s Chai-lai, and don’t you forget it!) and Charlotte (Char-LOTTE). We’ve discovered the joy that is a garbage plate. We know that everything is 20 minutes away, no matter where you are in Rochester. We love our community of Gates, and are still finding awesome things in Rochester and the surrounding area. I mean, there aren’t many things that are better than Wegmans, but there are plenty of non-grocery store things to do here too. If you ever want to visit the National Museum of Play, we can totally hook you up with a comfy guest room. It comes with two annoying cats and a friendly golden retriever, and all the dark roast you can drink. Just let us know!
