Ok maybe not the extravaganza part. When the date night budget line item is low, but you still want to do something fun together… you turn to the internet. Brian looked at a couple of blog sites that had fairly lengthy lists of “creative” stay-at-home date night ideas. As he read the ideas to me, some thoughts occurred: there seem to be people out there who may have never actually been on a date. Stuff like “just unplug and be together” does NOT qualify as a date night, in my opinion! Not that i don’t enjoy that, but it can be a bit aimless… I need a plan. Also, “exchange foot rubs” needs to be part of a bigger plan, because, well, it just does.
The winning idea for us the other night was to make a playlist from the year we stared dating. 1998 had some great tunes, and also some not-so-great ones! It was fun making our way through top 100 lists and compiling a list of songs we liked back then, songs that carry good memories with them, songs we had forgotten all about (Bryan Adams/Mel C duet, anyone?). We still know almost all the words to BNL’s One Week, and I still can’t believe I married someone who can sing multiple Backstreet Boys songs complete with slick dance moves. It’s a gift, really. Fun times AND the ability to educate/horrify our child with our past music choices – can’t ask for a better evening in!
