For a long time now, weight has been a personal battle for me. I’ve tried it all (except surgery) to lose the excess weight that has dogged me for years. Recently, Brian and I decided to change the way we eat, and switch to a ketogenic way of eating. Josh still eats carbs, and we still eat carbs – but we eat way less carbs than before. Sugar is not really a thing in our house. Josh gets to eat things like potatoes, but they are not part of the plan for Brian and I.
This is a huge change for us. I’ve been on a journey towards healthier eating for awhile now, but really needed a kickstart. I lost about 5 lbs the first week we really did this in earnest, so I’m pretty happy about that.
Eating this way is hard, no question. Saying goodbye to things like the odd blueberry muffin from Tim Hortons on my way to work, and the freedom to eat dessert when I feel like it – that’s not easy to do. However, I feel SO much better. Since Josh was small, I’ve had a big problem with a disc in my lower back. At any given moment, my muscles will go into spasm and I’m instantly in misery. It’s led to one ED visit and numerous trips to my primary care doctor and a referral to pain management. I’m also pretty good pals with a neurosurgeon. Reducing the sugar in my diet to pretty much nothing has led to a reduction in inflammation in my body – which means less back pain. Any day that I wake up not in pain is a good day in my books. I’ve spent way too much time battling this problem over the last 12 years.
This crazy ketogenic path that we’re on isn’t perfect, but it’s working. It’s led us to seek out cleaner ways of eating, and it’s helped me to really think about the connection between what I put into my body and the results in my daily life. I’m looking forward to seeing what benefits come our way!
